Open House Events at Midwest Fertility Center

Are you considering fertility testing or treatment, but not sure where to go? Seeking fertility treatment is a big step, and finding the right doctor can be difficult. We invite you to stop by our weekly Open House. The Midwest Fertility Center Open House is a great opportunity for you to visit our main facility, meet with members of the staff, and ask any questions you might have. We can even discuss the various insurance and financing options available through our practice. Talking to Your Friends and Family about Infertility

A dilemma you may face as an infertile couple is whether or not to tell your family members and friends about your infertility. If and when you do, other communication problems may arise. Well-meaning but insensitive remarks, such as "Oh, you just worry too much," or "All you need to do is relax; then you will get pregnant," can become a whole new kind of fertility problem.

At the other end of the spectrum are the relatives who want to join the infertility team. Newspaper clippings on the latest treatments arrive in the mail. Your sister calls to check on your basal body temperature. Your mother phones to review your care.

What treatment can help this aspect of infertility? A dose of honesty, perhaps: Sharing some of your feelings and some of your expertise may help the people who care about you to understand the situation better. You can help them realize that infertility is a medical condition, like diabetes or heart disease.

You and your spouse might want to agree about what you will or will not tell the people close to you. (A man may not want anyone to know about his sperm count.) When you talk to others about your infertility, there is no need to go into great detail or to divulge intimate information. A few stock responses and a smile can go a long way in the face of awkward social situations.

Sometimes, helping others to help you means reaching out to them a little. Decide what you want and what you don't want, and be direct about it. The key concept here is creating appropriate boundaries. For example, let your mother know that instead of calling every month and asking if you are pregnant yet, she could help you by asking how your treatment is going. If your friends and family are already being supportive, then be sure to let them know how much you value their concern.
